The Wonders of Green Tea

Green tea is rapidly becoming
one of the most popular
beverages in the world. The West
is beginning to discover the
healthy properties of Green tea
that have been known in the East
for centuries. Although Green tea
and Black tea both come from the
same plant, Camellia sinensis,
Green tea is a healthier choice
than Black tea. Green tea is rich
in the beneficial plant chemicals
called polyphenols, and it is
especially high in
epigallocatechin (EGCG), the
most powerful of the polyphenols.
Black tea, on the other hand,
contains almost no polyphenols.
The reason for this rests with the
difference in the way both teas
are processed. Green tea leaves
are lightly steamed and then
dried. The enzymes responsible
for oxidation are destroyed,
thereby leaving the polyphenols
intact. Black tea is fermented, for
flavor enhancement, and this
process results in the loss of
almost all of its polyphenol
content.
The health benefits of Green tea
can be substantial.
Epidemiological observations
indicate that populations
consuming Green regularly have
lower incidences of cancer. This
is encouraging cancer
researchers to explore this
possible anti-tumor connection
more closely. It is shown that
those drinking four to six cups of
Green tea daily appear to have
reduced risk of liver, pancreatic,
breast, lung, esophageal, and
skin cancers that those who drink
less or none. What is especially
intriguing is the fact that
Japanese cigarette smokers who
drank Green tea had a 45%
lower incidence of lung cancer
than Japanese smokers who did
not drink Green tea. Japanese
scientists stated during a 1991
meeting of the American Cancer
Society that Green tea extract
can be considered a "practical
chemopreventive agent to be
implemented in everyday life."
Recently, a Mayo Clinic reported
in the Journal of Cancer Letters
that the EGCG in Green tea may
be a potent killer of prostate
cancer cells. Laboratory studies,
using a special strain of mice, are
currently underway. The reason
of this potential benefit can be
attributed to the fact that the
polyphenols in Green tea are
powerful antioxidants. Reducing
the production of free radicals
may also play a role in an
anti-aging program.
Green tea may also be
responsible for reducing heart
disease, the number one killer in
this country. Green tea's
protective effect can be traced to
its ability to reduce platelet
aggregation. In addition, Green
tea may also play a role in
reducing blood pressure. The
latest category of hypertensive
medications are known as ACE
inhibitors because they inhibit the
synthesis of an enzyme called
angiotension-converting enzyme
(ACE) that is responsible for
constricting blood vessels.
Coincidentally, Green tea also
reduces the amount of ACE
produced by the body.
Green tea may also aid in the
proper metabolism of
carbohydrates and as a result
may also help to maintain lower
blood glucose levels. Controlling
serum glucose levels may be
another key to longevity. Animal
studies show that the group fed
Green tea had lower blood sugar
than the control group.
Green tea is also known to
contain a small amount of organic
fluoride and that could help to
reduce the occurrence of tooth
decay. Green tea may also help
by restricting the growth of
bacteria that cause cavities and
dental plaque. Look for
toothpastes and mouthwashes to
promote the addition of Green
tea extract in their products.
There are no specific drug
interactions connected to Green
tea, however, due to its possible
blood thinning and ACE reducing
effects, anyone taking aspirin,
other anti-coagulant drugs, or
ACE inhibitors for hypertension,
should consult with their
physician.
Finally, Green tea has been
consumed by Asian people for
centuries and appears to have
no known side effects. The
questions you may wish to ask
yourself, do you have time to wait
for conclusive studies or why not
start drinking Green tea now?

Cantalope,strawberries and tomatoes.
Apples and Bananas contain Valuable Bulk Fiber in the
form of indigestible cellulose, which is needed for
regular bowel movements.
Bananas are high in Magnesium and is useful in thr
treatment of diarrhea, colitis, ulcers and certain cases of
protien allergies. Bananas and Pears are the highest in
natural sugars.
It is perferable to obtain ripe rather than green fruits ,since
rope fruits caontain simple sugars that are very easily
assimilated aby the digestive system.

Grains:
Grains are often referred to as cereals; they are the seeds
of various grasses such as Wheat, Rye, Oats, Rice and
Barley. They are often called the "Staff of Life" . Common
foods made from these grains are Flours, Breads,
Cereals and Macaroni.
Whole grain flour  is the result of the 1st. milling
process.Whole grain flour contains the Germ of the grain,
which possesses the most nutrients.
All-Purpose flour is a blend of different wheat grains.
Bleached flour has been whitened to create a more
uniform flour.
Self rising flour has added salt and Leavening.
Enriched flour has the nutrients Thiamine, Riboflavin and
Niacin of the vitamin B complex, and sometimes Iron
returned to it .This enrichment also applies to cerals and
Macaroni.

Whole Grains:
Structure of a grain maybe separated into 3 different parts .
1. GERM is the heart of the grain. It is especially rich in the
B vitamins, vitamin E, Protein, unsaturated fat, minerials (
especially Iron )and Carbohydrates.
2. ENDOSPERM constitutes the largest part of the grain. It
is chiefly of Carbohydrates in thr form of starch, with some
incomplete protein and traces of vitamins and minerals.
3. BRAN  is the covering. Composing chiefly of
Carbohdrates ( starch ) , with traces of B vitamins,
minerals
( iron) and incomplete protein.

Legumes:
Legumes are plants that have edible seeds within a pod.
Pes, Beans, Lentils and peanuts.
legumes are rich source of incomplete  Protein, iron,
'Thiamine, Riboflavin and niacin. When sprouted they an
excellent source of vitamin C

Rice:
Whole Brown Rice contains a generous supply of B
vitamins, plus Calcium, Phosphorus, and Iron.Wild Rice
contains twice as much Protein, 4 times as much
Phosphorus, 8  times as much Thiamine and 20 times as
much Riboflavin as white rice.
White Rice dehulled polished rice, has no significant
amount of B vitamins but may be Enriched , as flours and
cereals.
Converted Rice has under gone a process similar to
milling and has a some what  higher vitamin content than
white  rice.

Soybeans:
Soybean products may serve as the major protein source
in meatless diet. However the balance of essential amino
acids in soybeans is not the same as meats. Therefore
more grams of this protein are required to supply
the essential amino acids adequately.
In  addition soybeans contain vitamins and minerals in a
natural relationship that is similar to the human body
needs.
Soy Flour has a nutty  taste and is rich source of Protein,
vitamin B complex, Calcium, Phosphorus, Potassium,
Magnesium and Iron.
Soy Oil contains large amounts of Linoleic acid (
unsaturated fatty acid essential to the human body).
Soybean oil is stable against oxidation and flavor
deterioration because of the Lecithin and vitamin E
content.
Soy milk is low in Fat, Carbs., Calcium, Phosphorus and
Riboflavin but rich in Iron, Thiamine and Niacin.

Meat:
Meat is the most important source of 1st. class protein in
the modern diet. In addition to Protein, Beef, Lamb and
Pork are a good source of B- complex vitamins ( Thiamine
and Riboflavin), Phosphorus, Iron, Sulfur, Potassium and
Copper.
Poultry is also a good source of Protein, and contains the
B-complex vitamins ( Niacin), Iron and Phosphorus.

Milk and milk products are excellent sources of Calcium,
complete protein and Riboflavin. Milk also contains
Phosphorus, Thiamine and vitamins B-6, B-12, but
contains little iron or vitamin C.
Pasteurized milk - kills bacteria to prevent milkborne
dieases.
Homogenized milk has its fat content finely dispersed
throughout, which makes it easily digested.
Whole milk contains about 3.5% of fat.
Skim milk is whole milk with the fat removed.
2% milk contains two percent fat, gives it more body and
flavor.

Is a Natural sweetner rich in B vitamins and mineralswith
a flavor of chocolate. Carob also contains a fair amount of
protein,sugar,and some calcium and phosphorus.
Tea for tumors. ( Green Tea )

Research shows one kind of tea
can be up to 100 times more
potent at blocking growth of
cancer cells than another. While
all tea (green, oolong or black)
contains antioxidant compounds
called catechins that protect
against cancer (especially of the
lung, breast, colon, stomach and
skin) by neutralizing free radicals,
green tea contains about 7 times
more catechins than black tea.
Green tea also has unique
catechins that block an enzyme
involved in breast, prostate and
colon cancers. Green tea is 10 to
100 times stronger than black tea
in blocking the growth of cancer
cells. Catechins also prevent
heart disease and stroke,
primarily by defending against
the harmful effects of
artery-clogging LDL cholesterol.

Description of USRDI listing: With more than one
listing: The first entry represents the RDA for children
twelve months to four years old; the second entry
represents the RDA for persons four years and older;
the third entry represents the RDI for pregnant and
lactating women. All listings are RDIs unless otherwise
noted

Note: The symptoms referred to on this page can
occur only when the daily intake of the minerals
mentioned has been less than the USRDA over a
prolonged period of time. These non-specific
symptoms do not alone prove nutritional deficiency,
but may be caused by any number of conditions or
may have functional causes. If these symptoms persist,
they may indicate a condition other than a vitamin or
mineral deficiency.
Asthma and the Need for Calcium

Many people with asthma use
oral and inhaled forms of
corticosteroids to help them
breathe comfortably. The
effective dose increases for
people over 40. High doses can
increase your risk of developing
osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a
bone disease in which the bones
lose density and become prone
to fractures.
Calcium is a bone builder and
when taken with Vitamin D, which
helps the body to absorb calcium,
it can help decrease the risk of
osteoporosis.
Suggested Calcium Intake - For
those at risk for osteoporosis the
suggested adult calcium intake is
1500 mg with 800 IU
(international units) of Vitamin D
per day.
Foods with Calcium - Foods rich
in calcium include dairy products,
tofu, raisins, sardines and salmon
with bones and dark green, leafy
vegetables like broccoli, chard
and collards.
Can You Get Enough Calcium? -
Unfortunately, some people are
either allergic to dairy products or
unable to digest them. In
addition, as we get older our
ability to absorb calcium
decreases and other nutrients,
such as large amounts of
proteins and fiber, can also
deplete the body's calcium.
Calcium Supplements - Calcium
supplements can help you to
reach your recommended daily
intake. Avoid the supplements
that contain bone meal, oyster
shell or dolomite as they could
contain toxic materials. Talk to
your doctor because calcium
supplements can interfere with
other medications and can cause
abdominal side effects. Start with
lower dosages and work your way
up.
The Need for Fluids
You can reduce asthma and
respiratory allergy symptoms by
thinning the mucus in the lungs.
And just as you would think,
drinking more fluids is the
answer. Mineral water with a high
calcium content can help you to
increase your intake of both
fluids and calcium.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Studies have shown that
Omega-3 fatty acids may be
effective in reducing asthma
symptoms in many people with
the condition. Another study
found that children who regularly
ate fresh, oily fish containing
Omega-3 fatty acids were four
times less likely to develop
asthma than children who rarely
or never ate oily fish. Scientists
speculate that the Omega-3 fatty
acids reduce airway inflammation
and responsiveness, thus
preventing the development of
asthma or reducing its severity.
Foods with Omega-3 Fatty Acids
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids are found
in oily fish such as salmon, tuna,
orange roughy, mullet, and
rainbow trout and in flaxseed,
soybean oil, canola oil and dark
green, leafy vegetables.
Choose Your Foods Carefully
Clear links have been made
between poor nutrition and the
bronchial difficulties of asthma.
Good nutrition helps the body to
fend off infection and to reduce
the symptoms of asthma and
allergies.
A Healthy Diet - A healthy diet
includes fresh fruits, vegetables,
nuts, seeds, and whole grains. A
diet high in fat may increase a
child's risk of developing asthma
while a diet rich in Vitamin E is
thought to improve lung function.
Food Labels - If you have
allergies and asthma it is always
a good idea to read food labels.
Know your triggers and watch for
them. A common ingredient,
modified wheat starch, is
"modified" by six chemicals that
can trigger allergies and asthma.
Know What You Need - If you
have a food allergy that
eliminates an entire food group
from your diet, talk to your doctor
about the vitamins or mineral
supplements you might need to
keep you in the pink.
Preventing Allergies in Children
Evidence suggests that fewer
allergies surface in the first two
years of a child's life if they were
exclusively breast-fed during their
first 6-12 months. In addition, if
the mother avoids eggs, cow milk,
peanuts and fish while nursing,
she may also help to reduce
eczema in her baby.
Supplement Foods

Supplementary foods may be useful
for individuals who wish to increase
the nutritional value of their meals.
Supplements may be in the form of
tablets, liquids, powders, syrups,
capsules, granules and bars,they all
may have different nutrients.

Any information concerning ailments is

Alfalfa
Alfalfa is a leguminous plant that is
rich in vitamin K and Calcium and
contains significant amounts of nearly
every other vitamin and mineral. The
seeds, sprouts and leaves of the plant
are edible and are also available in
the form of tablets, powder or tea.

Blackstrap Molasses
blackstrap molasses is a truly rich
source of minerals and vitamins. It
contains more Calcium than milk, more
iron than eggs and more potassium
than any food and is a excellent
source of B vitamins. It is also rich in
Copper, Magnesium, Phosphorus,
Pantothenic acid, Inositol and vitamin
E.
One tablespoon of blackstrap
molasses contains 3 milligrams of iron
and over 100 milligrams of calcium
and a good source of natural sugar.
Recommended daily dosage is one
tablespoon dissolved in one cup
lukewarm water or milk  ( Note) " 1/2
that amount is recommended for
children".
It is said to be good for Varicose
veins, Arthritis, Ulcers, dermatitis, Hair
damage, Eczema, Psoriasis, Angina
Pectoris, Constipation, Colitis, Anemia
and Nervous conditions may respond
to supplementing the diet with this rich
mineral rich molasses.

Bone Meal
A good supplement source of Calcium,
it is recommended for anyone whose
milk intake must be limited. It also
contains Phosphorus and the trace
minerals of Copper, Manganese,
Nickel and Fluorine ( are essential for
bones and teeth). Bone meal can be
usually be given in safely in any dose.
The recommended intake of bone
meal is 3 tablets or equivalent amount
per day.

Brewer Yeast
Brewer's yeast is one of the best
sources of B vitamins and Minerals. It
contains 16 amino acids, 14 minerals
and 17 vitamins. The recommended
supplement allowance is 1 tablespoon
daily. It may help to protect against
toxicity of large doses of vitamin D.
It is used to prevent constipation and
a good source of enzyme-producing
agents.
Wheat germ and brewers yeast taken
may be helpful in preventing heart
trouble.

Desiccated Liver
Desiccated liver  tablets are rich in
vitamin A, C, D, Iron, Calcium,
Phosphorus and Copper. They
recommended if liver is not eaten
once or twice a week and can be put
in soups, baked foods ( all) or any
other foods.

Lecithin
Lecithin is a natural constituent of
every cell of the human body and
helps to emulsify ( to disperse )
Cholesterol in the body. Lecithin is
high in Phosphorus and units with
Iron, Iodine and gives power and vigor
to the brain and aids in the digestion
and absorption of fats. Lecithin also
consists of Ordinary Fat, Unsaturated
Fatty Acids and Choline. Lecithin May
break up Cholesterol and allow it to
pass through arterial walls, helping to
prevent Atherosclerosis. It also has
been found to increase Immunity
against virus infections and to prevent
the formation of gallstones. It even
helps with the distributions of body
weight. Lecithin plays and important
part in maintaining  a healthy nervous
system and may help to clean the liver
and purify  the kidneys. Each
tablespoon (7.5 grams) of lecithin
granules contains about 1700 mg of
phosphatidyl choline, 1000 mg of
phosphatidyl inositol, and about 2,200
mg of essential fatty acids as linoleic
acid ( fish-oil-like, omega-3 linolenic
acid). It is the rule, not the exception,
for one or more of these valuable
substances to be under supplied by
our daily diet. Probably the best way
to get a lot of lecithin easily is to take
lecithin GRANULES. Stir the granules
quickly into juice or milk. They won't
dissolve, but rather will drift about as
you drink. Lecithin granules can also
be used as a topping on any cold
food. Ice cream comes to mind. Also,
they are not bad if stirred into yogurt.
If you put lecithin granules on hot
food, they will melt and you will then
have liquid lecithin. There are NO
Known Toxic Levels for Lecithin at this
time.

Beneficial Dietary Supplements
Cranberry is one of the best herbs for a bladder infection. Cranberries produce hippuric
acid, which inhibits bacteria growth in the bladder.

Grapefruit Seed Extract has shown to kill fungus and bacteria and may be used as a
douche or internally.

Colloidal Silver is a natural antibiotic that kills bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Garlic is a natural antibiotic that enhances the immune system.

Vitamin C creates an environment that reduces bacteria growth and supports the
immune system.

Acidophilus is beneficial for restoring friendly bacteria to your system.

Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc Complex supports bladder health and tissue repair.

Marshmallow and Uva Ursi is a natural diaretic and reduces bladder spasms.

Possible Causes of Bladder Infection / Cystitis
Nearly 85 percent of bladder infections are caused by Escherichia coli, a bacterium
normally found in the intestines. The E.coli bacteria often enters the urethra if a woman
wipes from back to front after a bowel movement. Chlamiydia may also cause bladder
infections in women. In men, bacteria enters the bladder by traveling up the urethra or
moving from an infected prostate gland.

Possible Symptoms of Bladder Infection / Cystitis
Signs of cystitis include an urgent desire to empty the bladder. Urination is typically
painful and frequent, even after the bladder has been emptied. The urine often has a
strong odor and may look cloudy. There may also be blood in the urine. Other
symptoms include fever, vomiting, chills, painful intercourse and fatigue. Children with
bladder infections often complain of lower abdominal pain and a burning sensation
during urination.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Bladder Infection / Cystitis
Drink plenty of water and cranberry juice. Always wipe from front to back after going to
the bathroom. Keep the genital area clean and urinate often. Be sure to empty the
bladder completely when urinating. Avoid douching. Take showers instead of baths.
Always urinate after intercourse and drink two full glasses of water to flush out the
bladder. A person with a bladder infection should avoid alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods
and citrus juices, which irritate the bladder.

"Pomegranates are fun to eat, but
messy," noted Samantha Heller, a
senior clinical nutritionist at New York
University Medical Center. For that
reason, she said, "juice may be a
better option."
Napoli and his colleagues tested the
effects of pomegranate juice in mice
that were bred to have high cholesterol
and on human heart cells in culture.
Previous studies, according to Napoli,
have suggested the antioxidants found
in pomegranate juice might reduce
plaque buildup on artery walls and
reduce oxidative stress on endothelial
cells, the cells that line blood vessels.
These cells produce nitric oxide, a
substance that helps the blood
vessels relax.
The researchers found that heart cells
treated with pomegranate juice had a
50 percent increase in nitric oxide
production, and that mice given
pomegranate juice reduced the rate of
plaque buildup by about 30 percent.
"The protective effects of pomegranate
juice were higher than previously
assumed," Napoli noted.
The researchers don't know the exact
reason why pomegranate juice
appears to protect artery walls from
fatty deposits, but they suspect that the
increased nitric oxide production may
play a role, and that polyphenols --
powerful antioxidants contained in
pomegranates and other foods -- may
directly protect the arteries by reducing
oxidative stress.
Other fruits and juices that contain
polyphenols include blueberries,
cranberries, oranges and grapes. Red
wine also contains polyphenols,
Napoli said.
Heller pointed out that while
pomegranates are very healthy and
high in antioxidants, they can be
expensive and aren't always easy to
find. Plus, she said, "all fruits and
vegetables are just packed with
healthy phytochemicals." Examples
she cited as being high in antioxidants
include berries, beans, apples,
pecans and artichokes, just to name a
few.
Heller also noted that the study was
done primarily on mice and that data
from mice don't always extrapolate to
humans. But, she added, "the
phytochemicals in pomegranates,
which are also present in other fruits
and vegetables, are really very good for
us, and do help prevent certain chronic
diseases like heart disease and
cancer."
Napoli said that while it is hard to
extrapolate data from mice to humans,
an equivalent amount of pomegranate
juice for humans would be the
equivalent of about 16 ounces daily.
Vitamin B1 - Thiamine

Thiamin or Thiamine, also
known as Vitamin B1 is is a
water-soluble vitamin needed to
process carbohydrates,
fat, and protein. Every cell of the
body requires
vitamin B1 to form the fuel the
body runs on—adenosine
triphosphate (ATP). Nerve cells
require vitamin B1 in
order to function normally. The
chemical name for this
water souble vitamin is
3-[(4-amino-2-methyl-5-
pyrimidinyl)methyl]-
5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-
methylthiazolium. Thiamine
consist of a pyrimidine ring and
a thiazole ring
connected by a one carbon link.
The nitrogen in the
thiazole ring has a charge of +1.

Thiamine is a coenzyme for the
decarboxylation of
pyruvate and the oxidation of
alpha keto-glutamic
acid. Lipoic acid which is
formed in the liver is also
required for the reactions.
Patients with liver
disease may show signs of B1
deficiency, possibly
because of deficient synthesis
of lipoic acid. In
vitro, thiamine deficiency
produces accumulation of
pyruvate and lactate, reduction
of acetate, citrate
and alpha-keto-glutarate and
reduced acetylcholine
synthesis. Any of these
metabolic changes could be
involved in dysfunction.

A major biologically active form
of thiamine is
thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP),
sometimes called
thiamine diphosphate (TDP)
and cocarboxylase. In
thiamine pyrophosphate the
hydroxyl group of thiamine
is replaced by a diphosphate
ester group. The reaction
site of TPP is carbon 2 of the
thiazole ring. The
proton on this carbon is rather
acidic. When this
proton dissociates a carbanion
is formed which readily
undergoes nucleophilic addition
to carbonyl groups.
TPP is a coenzyme for two types
of enzymes,
alpha-ketoacid dehydrogenases
and transketolases, both
of which cleave a C-C bond
adjacent to a carbonyl
group releasing either carbon
dioxide or an aldehyde.
The resulting product is then
transferred to an
acceptor molecule. alpha-
Ketoacid dehydrogenases
decarboxylate alpha-ketoacids.
The decarboxylation
product is then transferred to
coenzyme A (CoA).
Transketolases cleaves the C-C
bond adjacent to the
carbonyl group of an alpha-
ketosugar to give an
activated glycoaldehyde. The
glycoaldehyde is then
combined with an aldose to give
a new ketose. All
known TPP dependent enzymes
also require a divalent
cation, commonly Mg2+.

Thiamin pyrophosphate is a
coenzyme of pyruvate
dehydrogenase, α-
ketoglutaran dehydrogenase
and
transketolase. Because the first
two of these enzymes
are important in the metabolism
of carbohydrates,
thiamin deficiency causes
problems with it. Thiamin
deficiency also causes the
diseases Wernicke-Korsakoff
syndrome and beriberi,
diseases common in chronic
abusers of alcohol.
